Berlin 2011

An excellent stop on the road to the EUDC is Berlin Humboldt IV. With 44 teams, this year’s tournament provided both a challenge and an excellent opportunity to work out a few chinks in one’s debating armor not a month before Galway. The excellent CA team consisted of Filip Dobranic, Patrick Ehmann and Simone van Elk, providing for some interesting motions:
R1: THW financially incentivize parents to have two or more children,
R2: THBT any language which needs protection is not worth protecting,

Budapest - EUDC Prep

Another tournament that should not be missed is the Budapest Open. It
premiered on the debate circuit this year, between the 1st and 3rd of
July. Seen as a friendly prep tournament for the Galway Euros in
August, it counted 16 teams, and was organized by a new debate club at
Central European University in Budapest, under the initiative of Maja
Nenadović, whom you might also recognize as the Equity Officer in the
bid for Belgrade Euros. The organizing committee consisted of Srđan

Public debate on alcohol sale ban

The City of Belgrade has recently banned the sales of all alcohol products between the hours of 10 PM and 6 AM.
The majority of the people in the "Party Capital of Europe" (BBC Travel, Lonely Planet) didn’t welcome this decision.
Since then, youths have been organizing peaceful protests, using civil disobedience in the form of public drinking in parks at night.

Zagreb wins Denny Crane tournament

The Debating Club of the Faculty of Political Sciences organised yet another annual tournament this May – Denny Crane 2011. Hosting 24 teams, amongst which teams from Zagreb and Banja Luka, this was the biggest tournament organised by the FPN debate club since it was first established in 2008, with an ambition to grow into an even bigger regional tournament next year.

Teams were competing in 4 preliminary rounds, semi-finals and finals over two days, on the inspiring motions given by our CA Milan Vignjevic and DCA Vladica Jovanovic.

Split Open Final: Confrontation with locals

Locals in Split tried, unsuccessfully, to disrupt a debate about gay pride parades held at a downtown public location in their town. We revisit the incident through a feature story written by the CA of the tournament and Open Communication member Manos Moschopoulos that appeared on the Achte Minute debating magazine.
